What Data Does a Textile DPP Require?

Exact technical specifications are still being finalized through delegated acts, but the direction of travel for textile DPP requirements is clear and consistent. Build your data model around these datapoints:

Core product identity

  • A unique product identifier, in practice a GS1 GTIN (EAN/UPC), ideally assigned at the variant level — each size and color is a distinct commercial item.
  • Manufacturer / responsible economic operator details, and where relevant a GS1 GLN (Global Location Number) identifying the facility or legal entity.
  • Batch or lot number where traceability to a production run is required.

Material & environmental data

  • Material composition percentages — "80% organic cotton, 20% recycled polyester", not "cotton blend". Percentages matter because recyclers use them.
  • Recycled content share, where claimed.
  • Country / place of origin and, increasingly, key supply-chain stages.
  • Substances of concern — this is where REACH declarations connect to your DPP. If a restricted substance is present above threshold, it must be disclosed.

Circularity & use data

  • Care instructions — washing, drying, and maintenance guidance that extends garment life.
  • Repair and maintenance information, and for some categories a repairability score.
  • End-of-life guidance — how to recycle or return the item.

Evidence

  • Supplier certificates and test reports (GOTS, OEKO-TEX, EUDR declarations, lab results) attached as documents, not just claimed as text.

The distinction regulators care about most: an unsubstantiated claim versus a documented claim. "Made in Italy" as free text is a marketing statement. "Made in Italy" backed by an attached supplier declaration is evidence. Build your passport around the second one.


The Physical Packaging Challenge

Here is where most apparel brands stall. A Digital Product Passport is useless if a shopper standing in a store can't reach it. ESPR requires a data carrier physically present on the product, packaging, or documentation.

  • Treating DPP as a design project. It's a data project. The QR code is the last 5%.
  • One GTIN for a whole style. Variant-level identity is the point; sizes and colors are distinct items.
  • Free-text material fields. "Premium blend" is not a composition. Percentages, or it doesn't count.
  • Claims without documents. Attach the certificate. An unevidenced claim is a liability, not an asset.
  • Printing before validating. Check digits and resolver URLs must be verified pre-press.
